Kamala Nehru: A Courageous Freedom Fighter of India
Kamala Nehru Nehru
Kamala Nehru was one of the most inspiring women of India's freedom struggle. Born on 1 August 1899 in Delhi into a Kashmiri Pandit family, she grew up with strong cultural values and later became a symbol of courage, patriotism, and selfless service. She married Jawaharlal Nehru in 1916 and became the mother of Indira Gandhi, who would later serve as the Prime Minister of India.
Although she is often remembered as the wife of Jawaharlal Nehru, Kamala Nehru made significant contributions to India's independence movement through her own leadership and determination. She actively participated in Mahatma Gandhi's Non-Cooperation Movement and Civil Disobedience Movement, encouraging women to join the fight for freedom. She organized protests, picketed shops selling foreign goods and liquor, and motivated people to support the Swadeshi movement by using Indian-made products.
Whenever national leaders were imprisoned, Kamala Nehru stepped forward to inspire the public and keep the movement alive. She also worked for the welfare of women, children, and the poor, believing that true freedom meant social progress alongside political independence.
Despite suffering from tuberculosis for several years, she continued to support the freedom movement with remarkable courage. She passed away on 28 February 1936 in Lausanne, Switzerland, at the young age of 36. Her death was a great loss to the nation and deeply affected her family and fellow freedom fighters.
Kamala Nehru's legacy lives on through the many schools, colleges, hospitals, and public institutions named in her honor. She is remembered not only as a devoted wife and mother but also as a fearless patriot whose dedication helped strengthen India's struggle for independence. Her life continues to inspire generations to serve the nation with courage, sacrifice, and determination.
